At Rainbow Tots, in our pre-school, we follow the Jersey Quality Framework and look at the 7 areas of the curriculum, with Prime areas being Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical development and Communication and Language and Specific areas being Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive arts and Design. We offer the Nursery Education Funding (NEF) of 20 free hours which are taken through opening hours of States school term time to all children who are 3 years old before the 1st September. More details can be obtained on how this works from getting in touch with the manager of the nursery.
We aim to ensure that each child can recognize their name, are totally independent of making choices and of dressing themselves especially shoes, socks and coats. That they can sit and listen to a story for at least 10 minutes, participate in group activities, can follow simple instruction and most importantly be able to share and take turns with their friends. All of these help prepare them for their school reception class environment. Although there is a lot of activities on going in the class room we do like to bring the classroom outside whenever we can which gives children the opportunity to actually take on mark making, puzzles, counting and problem solving which they may not necessary feel they could do inside as well as going off to forest/beach school skills, where the children set their own boundaries and take part in fun learning activities. Once a week we have a music teacher who comes to teach the children new songs and play different percussion instruments to help their learning further in listening, rhythm and being creative and a yoga teacher in our Beaumont nursery helping the children learn about different yoga positions, helping their inner-calm and whole well-being.
We have in place a lending library where each week your child will choose a book to take home to share the story with you. This helps your child to develop communication, language and literacy skills as well as helping re-tell the story and make a choice of which book they would like. We also have a 'take home teddy bear' at each nursery who is also a big part of language development, he joins different children at the weekend along with his diary that parents help their child fill in, so that they can come back and tell us what adventures he has been on with them. We really focus on FUN and learning through play. We focus on introducing academic concepts and refining their social skills to help them become a confident, happy child as they take their next big step in life to 'Big School'.
We are registered up to 20 children in our Beaumont pre-school nursery and 11 children at our Les Quennevais pre-school nursery with ratios being 1 member of staff to 8 children.
